Book are difficult to display: Jiří Rathouský

September 9 – October 10, 2015

Invitation - Photogallery

An open cycle of exhibitions called Knihy se těžko vystavují (Books are Difficult to Display) highlights the work of leading book designers, graphic artists and typographers mainly of the period after World War II.  It presents a book as a piece of art. The cycle is organised by the Elpida Society and the Archive of Fine Arts that provided most of the exhibits. Martin Hůla, a graphic designer, musician and book collector is the curator of exhibitions.
Graphic designer and typographer Jiří Rathouský (1924-2003) became famous mainly as the author of information systems (The New Stage of the National Theatre, the InterContinental Hotel in Prague and the Thermal Hotel in Carlsbad). He designed brands that have been commonly used and recognised, e. g. logos of the National Theatre, Albatros Publishing House, or Olympia Publishers. He participated in graphic design of Prague metro information system and created for it a characteristic font called Metron. His unique realisation is the so-called unified visual identity of the city, successfully applied to Prague housing estate Jižní město II. The rational approach of Rathouský found perfect use even in conceptual solution of many book series, for instance Mladé cesty, Hudba na každém kroku etc., the best known among them is the Gallery of Modern Authors of Odeon Publishing House, for which he created a special font called Alphapipe.
