95 Years of the Czech PEN Club

The exhibition presents correspondence, documents and photographs that originated and have been preserved during the decades of activities of the former Czechoslovak and later Czech PEN Club, established by Karel Čapek on February 15, 1925 to promote freedom of speech and press. Čapek was the first president of the Czechoslovak PEN Club, followed by such personalities like Anna Marie Tilschová, Vítězslav Nezval, Adolf Hoffmeister, Jiří Mucha, Ivan Klíma or Jiří Stránský, honorary president of Czech PEN was also Václav Havel. This display is an extended version of the exhibition of 2015. It has been organised thanks to the cooperation with the Literary Archive of the Museum of Czech Literature.

A unique virtual exhibition of the National Library of the CR commemorates the 70th anniversary of Action K and Action Ř – the communist attacks against monasteries and nunneries in Bohemia. The name of the exhibition Action K: The Destruction of Monasterial Libraries refers to events that resulted in destruction or damage of many books kept until then in rich collecions of monasterial libraries.
