100 Years of the First Public Libraries Act
July 22 – October 12, 2019

Invitation - Photogallery

The exhibition 100 Years of the First Public Libraries Act commemorates an important milestone of modern Czechoslovak librarianship. It was the first law on libraries – The General Public Libraries Act No. 430/ Coll., of July 22nd 1919, and the following implementation document – The Order of the Government of the Czechoslovak Republic of November 5th 1919.
Individual panels of the display show the importance of the legislative documents for establishing a unique network of local libraries in Czechoslovakia and its practical impact. The exhibition also features several eminent personalities, who either contributed to the preparation and development of concrete concepts, leading to the wording of the Act, or were authors of some parts of the text. It illustrates its implementing on the territory of former Czechoslovakia, focuses on minority libraries and also on “education of both readers and librarians.“ Display showcases present examples of contemporary literature from the collections of the Library of Library Science Literature, Librarianship Institute of the NL of the CR.
