The Book and the Veil. 1100 Years Since the Death of Duchess and Saint Ludmila

In 2021, we commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the martyr death of St. Ludmila, the first baptised Czech Duchess, grandmother of St. Wenceslas and the oldest patron saint of the Czech lands. The development of her veneration reflects the intricate spiritual history of the Czech lands, the rise of Christianity, the relationship of the Utraquists to her personality, the rise of the devotion to her in the Baroque period etc. The theme of St. Ludmila appears to different extents across the National Library´s collections. In the earliest manuscript documents, like the record of the part of the Legenda Christiani [Christian´s Legend] in the manuscript VI E 13 from the end of the 12th century, she is reflected as the first Czech christened ruler, in addition to it closely connected with St. Wenceslas. In later medieval manuscripts, she is characterized primarily as a grandmother of St. Wenceslas, e. g. in the Velislav Bible or in the Paris fragment of the Latin translation of the Chronicle of Dalimil. The gradual change in the perception of her personality was reflected in early modern material, e. g. graduals and incunabula, especially during the Baroque period, e. g. in Czech language hagiographic prints. On the threshold of the Modern Age, her legend was critically evaluated.
The display features both manuscript and printed documents connected with the personality of St. Ludmila – from the earliest manuscritpts containing only brief mentions, through the richly illuminated manuscripts, the first printed production to early modern Czech printed documents. The exhibition does not aim to capture St. Ludmila and her cult in written sources in full, it will be the subject of an extensive monograph prepared on the occasion of her death anniversary. The National Library focuses, above all, on presenting St. Ludmila in its own key materials published up to 1800 and kept in its historical collections.
Main partners of the project are the Evangelical Theological Faculty, Charles University in Prague, the Philosophical Faculty, Charles University in Prague, the Institute of History, the Academy of Sciences of the CR, The Saint Ludmila 1100 Years Association, and the Institute of Art History, the Academy of Sciences of the CR.

The exhibition commemorates 100th anniversary of the rise and the course of the Czechoslovak aid to Russian émigrés – a unique financial and organizational support programme of the Czechoslovak government to Russian emigrés escaping from Bolsheviks.

Ex oriente lux. Between Orient and the Awakening of the Czech Nation: Rudolf Dvořák (1860–1920)

The exhibition dedicated to life anniversary of Rudolf Dvořák, first Professor of Oriental Studies at Czech Charles-Ferdinand University, an Arabist, Iranian specialist, Turcologist and Sinologist, who played an important role in the development of Egyptology cuneiform studies. He participated in organization of scientific life at University and Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts.
